Computing

Computing is an important and valued subject because it is highly relevant in an increasingly digital world. Today’s technology is constantly developing and is becoming an integral part of our daily lives. Technology is everywhere and will play a pivotal part to us all. Therefore, we want to model and educate our pupils on how to use technology positively, responsibly and safely.

At Leasowe Primary School, we aim to prepare our children for a rapidly changing world through the use of technology. We want our pupils to be creators not consumers and our broad curriculum encompassing computer science, information technology and digital literacy reflects this.

Children at Leasowe Primary School are given the opportunity to develop the skills to operate electronic devices and multimedia computers to process information, aid research and present their work in exciting ways. We use computing creatively to enhance learning for all children and as a tool to support all aspects of our work in school.

EYFS

Computing and technology are important subjects to deliver to EYFS children. A well-planned computing curriculum in the EYFS ensures that children enter Year 1 with a strong foundation of key skills and knowledge. Computing lessons in the EYFS also ensure that children develop coordination skills, listening skills, problem-solving abilities and questioning — as well as improving subject knowledge and skills across the seven areas of learning. With the technology strand being removed from the EYFS curriculum, hi-impact have developed a set of skills and experience for EYFS to use which will prepare the children for Computing in KS1.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), computing and early computing skills are introduced through play-based, exploratory, and hands-on activities. The emphasis is on developing foundational skills such as logical thinking, problem-solving, and an understanding of technology's role in the world around them.

We also place the activities across the rest of the EYFS curriculum.  Taking photographs of everyday objects linked to science, reading digital books and using the navigation buttons to move forwards and backwards.  Using paint and drawing programs to develop mark making and fine motor skills. Using Robots to develop directional language, recognise common symbols etc. There are five units to use across the whole year which include: digital literacy, computer science, maths, phonics, celebrations and , plus a variety of topic specific, technology and computing enhancements which can be used at any point throughout the year.

Leasowe Primary School works closely with Hi-Impact to ensure the use of technology is ‘current’ and shows clear progression across the school. This allows all of our pupils to benefit from a broad curriculum that encompasses computer science, information technological and digital literacy. Hi-Impact regularly provides children with many high-quality workshops throughout the year which gives the children access to opportunities which they may normally not be presented with. Such workshops provide children with opportunities to use the latest technology such as virtual reality (VR) headsets and programmable robots. As well as opportunities to develop team work and strategical planning/ thinking.
